The American Society of Radiologic Technologists has launched Proton Therapy, a new online education course that highlights the benefits and characteristics of proton therapy and the basics of proton therapy equipment. Proton therapy is a growing cancer treatment technology that is known for its ability to target cancerous lesions without damaging adjacent healthy tissue.
Module one of the two-module-set provides in-depth information about physics, equipment and treatment planning, including a guide to key terminology and components. Module two focuses on proton radiobiology and malignancies treated with proton therapy.
According to Natasha Hadrych-Rosier, ASRT radiation therapy manager, the set provides in-depth information about proton physics, patient care concerns, and the unique nature of proton therapy treatment planning and delivery. “Proton therapy provides more choices for patients who have previously had few or no options for treating their cancer,” she said. “With the potential for fewer side-effects, it is important for radiation therapy professionals to have a greater understanding of proton physics and how it is used in treatments, not only now, but in years to come.”
An institutional, non-CE credit version is also available on CD and is licensed for unlimited use. The institutional product contains a test bank with answer key, transcripts, printable student certificates, relevant knowledge checks, clear learning objectives and an image library containing 83 illustrations.
Together, the set is worth 3 Category A continuing education credits and is accepted by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, Medical Dosimetrist Certification Board, and Association for Medical Imaging Management. It is also approved for credit in Texas and California.
Documentation of achievement will be provided upon completion of both modules.
