Medtronic, Minneapolis, has received 510(k) approval for its PoleStar® N30 Surgical MRI system, a neuro oncology surgical solution. PoleStar is designed to help oncology surgeons with tumor resections with real-time surgical MR imaging.

The PoleStar Surgical MRI system features intra-operative imaging information to help neurosurgeons gain more confidence to achieve maximum tumor resection and avoid damaging critical areas of the brain.

“Jim Cloar, vice president and general manager of the navigation division at Medtronic commented in the press release, “With its unique compact design, the PoleStar Surgical MRI system enables neurosurgeons to benefit from intra-operative MR imaging without the compromises inherent in other systems, such as extensive renovation of the operating room or restrictions upon the surgeons’ choice of instruments.”

Moshe Hadani, MD, chairman of neurosurgery, Sheba Medical Center in Israel also noted in the announcement that the system had improved its ergonomics over previous versions.

“The scanner is smaller, easier to handle and it fits better into the OR environment,” said Hadani. “Using the PoleStar, I have great confidence in the extent of tumor resection prior to closing.”
