Siemens Healthineers has received U.S. FDA clearance for the Magnetom Terra.X, a second-generation clinical 7-tesla MRI scanner. This updated model features new hardware and XA60A software, succeeding the original Magnetom Terra released in 2017. The FDA clearance also encompasses upgrades for existing Magnetom Terra systems to the Magnetom Terra.X and XA60A software.

“The Magnetom Terra.X builds on our engineering achievements as pioneers in 7T MRI by providing the ultra-high-field community with the necessary tools to offer higher-quality patient care not just in neurological imaging, but also in the knee,” says Katie Grant, vice president of MR at Siemens Healthineers North America. “Additionally, this scanner supports key research initiatives pertaining to neurodegenerative disease, which is a major concern for our aging population.”

The Ultra IQ Technology enhances image quality compared to the company’s previous 7T MRI systems. An 8-channel parallel transmit architecture improves image clarity, revealing finer details. Both the Magnetom Terra and Magnetom Terra.X, with syngo MR XA60A software, feature Deep Resolve—an image reconstruction technology trained with 7T data, improving speed and resolution at 7T.

Additionally, the scanner’s new gradient system delivers improved diffusion imaging and functional MR imaging, according to Siemens Healthineers.

The scanner’s multinuclear option permits clinical imaging of substances in the body—for example, sodium in the brain and phosphorus in muscle tissue—that are not as easily visualized with standard MR field strengths. The ability adds a metabolic component to the anatomical imaging capabilities of 7T MR.
