The Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) Research and Education (R&E) Foundation has announced that the organization will award 94 grants in 2014 worth a record $3.6 million—the largest amount the foundation has ever funded in a single year. Recipients span 44 institutions throughout North America, with two applicants from the Netherlands and Sweden also earning awards.

“This funding would be impossible without the generous financial support received from countless individuals and our corporate and private practice partners and friends,” said James P. Borgstede, MD, chair of the R&E Foundation. “We are incredibly grateful for their commitment to funding radiology’s future.”

The awards are intended to fund innovative research in a variety of areas, including the use of hyperpolarized Carbon-13 MRI for noninvasive monitoring of liver and the use of 3-D ultrasound to understand hip dysplasia in infants.

Educational grants also aim to improve teaching and training skills, with winning projects aimed at simulation-based training for CT protocol and the development of problem-based educational material for medical physics residency training.

The Foundation has awarded more than $44 million to over 1,000 investigators and educators since 1984, and maintains a funding rate of 25%. According to the organization, every dollar awarded by the foundation results in more than $40 received from other sources, including the National Institutes of Health, corporations, and private entities.
