January 4, 2007—In July 2006, Siemens Medical Solutions Inc (Malvern, Pa) announced its pending acquisition of both Diagnostic Products Corporation (DPC) and Bayer Healthcare’s diagnostics division. On January 1, the three companies merged to create a new Siemens subsidiary, Siemens Medical Solutions Diagnostics, which employs around 8,000 people worldwide.

Siemens’ strategy, the company says, is to unite medical imaging, laboratory diagnostics and clinical IT under one roof: “Siemens [is] bringing together for the first time a unique set of products and services that will speed the development of molecular medicine capabilities, and improve the efficiency and quality of healthcare,” according to Erich Reinhardt, PhD, president and CEO of Siemens Medical.

Anthony Bihl, previous president of Bayer Diagnostics, has been named CEO of the new business; Sid Aroesty, formerly the COO of DPC, will be COO; and Jochen Schmitz, previous CFO of Siemens Medical’s Molecular Imaging division, will be CFO.
