Manhattan Diagnostic Radiology today announced that it will be the first imaging facility in Manhattan to offer positron emission mammography (PEM), using a PEM Flex scanner from Naviscan Inc., of San Diego, Calif.

This installation aims to provide Manhattan Diagnostic Radiology with an enhanced ability to image and diagnose early-stage breast cancers.

According to Naviscan, the PEM Flex scanner uses PET technology to generate
high-resolution tomographic images of 1.5 millimeters resolution, enabling physicians to visualize breast tumors about the size of a grain of rice.

The size of a mammography unit, the scanner consists of two high-resolution detector heads that are placed in close proximity to the breast.  Compared to the higher-force compression necessary for mammography, the PEM Flex scanner uses gentle breast immobilization.
