ASTRO recently announced that it will be changing its name from the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology to the American Society for Radiation Oncology.

Nevertheless, the new logo will keep the acronym ASTRO, with the “T” representing the society’s tagline: “Targeting Cancer Care.”

According to ASTRO, “the term ‘therapeutic radiology’ has become outdated and confusing as radiation oncology has evolved into a specialty very separate from its origins in diagnostic radiology.”

Established as the American Club of Therapeutic Radiologists in 1958, the society has changed its name four times.
