A new report from KLAS indicates that in choosing a mammography vendor, healthcare providers are increasingly seeking a partner to help navigate confusion caused by breast density reporting laws, social and political issues, and growing consumer involvement. “Breast Imaging 2014: Finding a Partner for the Future” reported on vendors including Fujifilm, GE Healthcare, Hologic, MagView, MRS, PenRad, and Siemens.

The research firm spoke to 183 providers, asking respondents which vendor they would select if they were making a decision now. All current Hologic customers affirmed they would stick with the company, reflecting the rising importance of new technologies such as breast tomosynthesis. (Hologic is the only vendor in the United States currently approved for tomosynthesis.)

Siemens customers also reported high rates of satisfaction and optimism that the company would soon provide tomosynthesis technology. GE customers reported satisfaction with the available 2D technology, but were mixed in their assessment of the vendor’s customer relationships.

“There were a few recurring themes we heard from providers during our research: partnerships, tomosynthesis and breast ultrasound,” said Monique Rasband, the report’s author. “Providers who have adopted tomosynthesis reported overwhelmingly positive feedback, and those who have not are looking forward to FDA approval for other vendors in the future. Additionally, more providers are looking at automated whole breast ultrasound, and breast applications for general ultrasound are getting stronger.”
