The American College of Radiology (ACR) has awarded the Providence Portland Medical Center its Diagnostic Imaging Center of Excellence distinction. The facility is the tenth in the country to receive the honor, and the first on the west coast. The center performs 180,000 scans per year, including mammography, CT, MRI, ultrasound, and PET scans and bone density tests.

“Every one of our caregivers is committed to serving our patients with compassionate and excellent care,” said Mary Savage, diagnostic imaging director, Oregon Region. “This designation is an honor and it recognizes the hard work of the imaging team.”

The award was given after the ACR survey team met with Providence Portland staff, including the radiology medical director, radiation safety officer, regional director, site administrator, physicians, and a team of lead technologists. The day-long assessment evaluated the entire enterprise, including structure and outcomes.

In order to be eligible, Providence Portland is accredited by the ACR in all forms of imaging it provides. The facility also conducts ongoing self-assessment and improvement initiatives by maintaining and monitoring a regional quality improvement dashboard, developing process improvement projects, and participating in the ACR’s National Mammography Database, Dose Index Registry, and General Radiology Improvement Database, as well as the Image Wisely and Image Gently campaigns.

“Providence Portland is just the beginning,” Savage said. “We are working with our other seven hospitals in Oregon to earn the same designation, which will reflect the same high quality of imaging care to all of our patients throughout the state.”
