Manhattan-based NYU Langone Medical Center and Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn have announced plans to establish a clinically integrated provider network across New York City.  NYU Langone includes four hospitals and the NYU School of Medicine. Lutheran Medical Center is an academic teaching and tertiary care hospital under the Lutheran HealthCare system. Its facilities include a Level I trauma center, a New York state-designated stroke center, a STEMI (ST segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction) center, and a bariatric center.

Under the agreement, the two medical centers will create a formal health system, pending formal approval in 2015. The facilities will use Lutheran’s primary care network to develop a fully integrated system in Brooklyn and improve access to ambulatory care. The deal also includes plans for a broad IT infrastructure to support the integration and population health initiatives, including maternal and pediatric health, cancer services, cardiac and vascular services, and physician development.

NYU Langone and Lutheran Medical Center currently partner to provide care at NYU’s freestanding emergency department in Long Island. The proposed health system will also establish a new emergency and ambulatory care facility at this location.

“Today’s agreement publicly confirms our confidence that an affiliation will allow both of our institutions to collaborate and share best practices to better meet the healthcare needs of the communities we serve,” said Robert Grossman, MD, dean and CEO of NYU Langone.
