As obesity moves to the top of the list of chronic conditions plaguing Americans, radiologists are finding that it is becoming more difficult to image bariatric patients on conventional systems.

Central Mississippi Medical Center (CMMC), Jackson, Miss., recently solved its bariatric imaging challenges by installing a Toshiba America Medical Systems, Inc. Vantage Titan MR system.

The Titan’s 71 cm aperture and large open bore enables CMMC to image its obese patients in comfort and with ease, according to a Toshiba press release. Among the features that make the system particularly patient friendly is its feet-first imaging and Pianissimo noise-reduction technology.

In addition to MR exams for bariatric patients, CMMC uses Toshiba’s non-contrast MRA techniques for patients with renal insufficiencies. It also uses the system for the evaluation of non-healing wounds in diabetic patients. When not being used for bariatric or other specialized patients, the system is used for general patient imaging, including head, neck, spine, knee, and abdominal/pelvis exams.
