Barco has released the results of a survey of radiologists conducted across France, Germany, the UK, and North America by the independent research agency The MarkeTech Group, asking, “What makes a good read?” MarkeTech found that increased imaging volumes, imaging study complexity, and ergonomic challenges ranked among the top concerns for the 223 respondents.

A majority (91%) of participants indicated that image quality is the most important aspect of a medical display, with 80% citing the benefits of higher spatial resolution and 68% stating that higher contrast would enhance clinical practice.

Productivity also remains a key emphasis. The survey found that 60% of radiologists routinely use both color and grayscale displays. In the United States, 84% read both digital mammography and color PACS. Respondents suggested features such as faster image loading and manipulation (92%), a larger screen surface (78%), and the ability to load both color and grayscale images on one screen (66%) in order to improve productivity.

MarkeTech also found that 87% of radiologists experience eye fatigue, neck strain, and back pain when reading images, opening the door to further improvements in the ergonomic benefits of displays. An easy-to-adjust stand, increased ambient room lighting, reduced screen glare, and keyboard task lighting were among the improvements suggested.
