October 5, 2006—The US Department of Veterans’ Affairs (VA) announced yesterday that it has selected IBM to help establish an interoperable and secure IT system for all of the VA’s major business units, including the Veteran’s Health Administration, Veterans Benefit Administration and National Cemetery Administration.

“The reorganization of our information technology infrastructure will improve the Department’s ability to provide the full range of benefits and programs to the nation’s veterans,” said VA Secretary R. James Nicolson. “IBM is the right partner to help us achieve this goal.”

IBM will assess the VA’s current IT operations and implement higher standards for factors such as interoperability, management, and security. The contract will last through 2008 and is valued at around $16 million.
