A partnership between Siemens Healthcare and Olympus Medical Systems Corporation is poised to deliver game-changing technology into the hands of radiologists.

The new magnetically guided capsule endoscope (MGCE) will allow radiologists to easily and comfortably perform stomach examinations by having the patient simply swallow the endoscope. The radiologist—using a joystick—will pilot the endoscope to the areas of interest while capturing high-resolution, real-time images that are sent to clinicians. The controls will allow the MGCE to be tilted, rotated, or moved horizontally and vertically.

The capsule endoscope will be about 31mm long and 11mm in diameter. Camera systems mounted at both ends of the capsule are intended to allow observation inside the stomach. During the examination, the patient’s stomach will be filled with water to provide a field of vision for the capsule endoscope and enable navigation.
