The Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) has selected Instituto Nacional de Salud del Niño de San Borja in Lima, Peru, as the next host for its Global Learning Center (GLC). This marks the second GLC funded by the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration. The initiative, Global Health Initiative: Access to Radiology,” aims to enhance patient care in low- and middle-income countries and foster peaceful nuclear energy use.

Improving Radiology Education and Access

RSNA GLCs collaborate with radiology departments in resource-limited settings to provide education, improve patient care, and increase technology access. These centers aim to become regional hubs of radiology excellence.

“RSNA is pleased to partner with Instituto Nacional de Salud del Niño de San Borja,” says Jorge A. Soto, MD, RSNA Board Liaison for International Affairs. “We look forward to supporting their pediatric and oncologic radiology needs and creating a curriculum tailored to the needs of Lima and radiologists throughout Peru.”

Instituto Nacional de Salud del Niño de San Borja is a specialized pediatric hospital. “We are excited to receive support and mentorship,” says Mario Chirinos, MD, on-site program director. “We hope to develop our skills and advance radiology in our country.”

Pediatric Radiology Volunteer Positions

The program will span three years, with RSNA members providing hands-on training, lectures, and equipment support. Volunteer faculty members will travel to Lima to design a tailored educational plan in consultation with on-site faculty. Applications for volunteer faculty positions in pediatric radiology and pediatric oncology are open, with selections set for December 2024.

The first RSNA GLC launched in 2020 at Stellenbosch University in South Africa. Since then, GLCs have opened in Tanzania, Ecuador, Indonesia, and Armenia.
