The American Roentgen Ray Society recognized Jonathan Kruskal and Douglas Katz for their contributions to medical imaging and clinical research.
The American Roentgen Ray Society (ARRS) awarded its 2026 Gold Medal to Jonathan B. Kruskal and Douglas S. Katz during the opening ceremony of the ARRS Annual Meeting in Pittsburgh.
The Gold Medal is the highest honor bestowed by the society, recognizing physicians who have provided distinguished service to the practice and science of medical imaging and allied sciences for more than 40 years, according to an ARRS announcement.
Contributions to Clinical Assays and Molecular Imaging
Jonathan B. Kruskal, MB, ChB, PhD, is the chair of the department of radiology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston and the Melvin E. Clouse professor of radiology at Harvard Medical School. During his doctoral studies at the University of Cape Town, Kruskal developed a clinical assay for D-dimer as part of his research into hepatic procoagulant dysfunction.
His subsequent research at Harvard Medical School involved developing molecular imaging probes to identify the mechanisms of colorectal metastases. Kruskal served as ARRS president from 2021 to 2022 and has published more than 250 manuscripts. He has also served as president of the Society of Abdominal Radiology and as a member of the American College of Radiology Board of Chancellors.
Leadership in Clinical Research and Education
Douglas S. Katz, MD, serves as the vice chair for research for the department of radiology at NYU Langone Hospital–Long Island and is a professor of radiology at NYU Long Island School of Medicine. Katz has coauthored 1,061 publications and abstracts and coedited 12 books, including the Atlas of Emergency Imaging from Head-to-Toe, which was released in January 2026.
Katz previously served as director of body imaging and vice chair for clinical research and education at NYU Langone Hospital–Long Island. He is a past president of the Long Island Radiological Society and has held leadership positions in the American Society of Emergency Radiology and the Society of Abdominal Radiology. Katz is also a recipient of the Radiological Society of North America Lifetime Honored Educator Award.
ARRS is North America’s first radiological society and focuses on the advancement of medicine through medical imaging. The organization publishes two journals, the American Journal of Roentgenology and Roentgen Ray Review.
