Health Gorilla, an online healthcare marketplace that provides doctors and clinicians with access to more than 9,000 diagnostic labs and 35,000 radiology centers, has signed a multi-year agreement with Breast Imaging Specialists, a provider of breast tomosynthesis services based in Los Gatos, Calif. The agreement will make the practice’s 3D mammography services available through the Health Gorilla site.

Breast tomosynthesis continues to be explored as an alternative to traditional digital mammography, particularly for women with dense breasts for whom traditional exams may be insufficient to detect cancer. A recent multisite study published in the June 25, 2014 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association compared breast cancer detection rates for standard 2D mammography with those of tomosynthesis at 13 academic and non-academic breast cancer centers. Researchers found that tomosynthesis resulted in a decreased recall rate and a 41% increase in the breast cancer detection rate.
