Echoing a recent statement by the Access to Medical Imaging Coalition (AMIC), the Medical Imaging & Technology Alliance (MITA) has affirmed the importance of physician-developed appropriate use criteria (AUC) in response to a recent article in JAMA Internal Medicine that identified several imaging modalities in a list of low-value medical procedures.

“When used appropriately, medical imaging saves lives and prevents costly, invasive procedures down the road,” said Gail Rodriguez, executive director of MITA. “A thoughtful, evidence-based approach, rooted in AUC, is the best way to safeguard access and guide medical imaging utilization in a way that is tailored to each patient’s unique medical condition.”
