A recent report from the research firm KLAS looks at the reality behind data sharing across Epic and non-Epic systems. In a report titled “Epic HIE 2014: Everywhere, Elsewhere, or Nowhere Else?” researchers discuss findings from 28 providers about the ease of interoperability, the challenges of sharing clinical data, and the methods used across various systems.

“Epic is seen by many competitors and providers as not playing well with others,” said report author Mark Allphin. “Yet the providers we interviewed told us a more complex story. Data is being shared, but the effort required to get there can be very different depending on whether you are on the Epic side of the exchange or with some other vendor.”

According to Allphin, the study found that while data sharing among Epic and non-Epic systems poses significant challenges, providers have found ways around the roadblocks. The full report is available on KLAS’ website.
