Every medical tool and system has its day to be replaced by another that makes workflow more efficient. For Crystal Lake Orthopedics (CLO) replacing its legacy Viztek ONYX-RAD client server PACS was a breeze because, after an extensive search, it found that Viztek’s Opal-ORTHO PACS delivered the service that its growing practice needed.

The Opal has numerous tools specifically designed for the orthopedist. While these were among the factors in its favor, it’s web-based platform was another, according to CLO Executive Director Edward Grogg in a Viztek press release. “In addition to specialized orthopedic tools—including measurement tools and surgical templating—that benefit every orthopedic practice, we felt the upgrade to a web-based system would better support our orthopedic center as it has evolved today,” he said. “A web-based system enables practice members to read images offsite from any web-enabled computer as if they were in their own office. It also enables easy image communication to other physicians for any additional specialized interpretation.”

In addition to the convenience and flexibility offered by a web-based system, the Opal will also receive routine, automatic program upgrades via the Internet, cutting down on the need for in-office IT support. The Opal also allows for secure, offsite storage with an optional ultra-secure, redundant managed image archive that offers both primary storage and disaster protection at an affordable price, according Viztek.
