The ability to track tumor targets during radiation therapy treatments has been given a boost with the recent product distribution agreement between Calypso Medical Technologies, Inc., a developer of real-time technology for precise tracking, and Siemens Healthcare.

Under the terms of the agreement, Siemens will have non-exclusive rights to sell Calypso’s real-time tracking technology to existing and prospective Siemens linear accelerator customers throughout Europe for a three-year period.

Calypso’s GPS for the Body technology enables radiologists and other clinicians to localize and track a tumor before and during radiation treatments. When the tumor moves outside the radiation field, therapy can be halted and the patient repositioned to ensure that healthy tissue is unaffected during the treatment.

This makes radiation therapy safer and more effective for patients, eliminating the need to expose them to additional radiation doses.
